Indians seeking to apply for a Canada PR Visa or Citizenship can now choose PTE Core to prove proficiency in the English Language. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has now approved this test for PR Visa applications. Pearson has commenced the tests on 12 February 2024.

IRCC declared on 30 January 2024 that it is now accepting PTE Core for all immigration pathways that need language tests. The only exception is the SDS – the Student Direct Stream.

Previously, CELPIP and IELTS were the only two tests for English language accepted for Canada PR Visa applications. This resulted in challenges for some applicants due to the availability of tests, personal learning styles, and format preferences.

PTE Core is the latest addition to the portfolio of Pearson Test of English that has distinctive similarities with PTE Academic. It has a duration of 2 hours, is an exam based on a computer, and is held in a test center ambiance. The 4 English language competencies it assesses are Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking.

Customized to the needs of professional test-takers, PTE Core offers nonacademic and real-life focus. It has been designed to fulfill the unique immigration needs of Canada and the language proficiency standards specified by IRCC. It can be used for assessing proficiency in the English language for occupational purposes in any nation.

PTE Core is Available in India and Globally

Director of English Language Learning at Pearson India Prabhul Ravindran said that the PTE Core is now available to test takers in Canada who seek to live and work in Canada. The new test from Pearson aims to offer real-life and vocational focus and support the immigration needs of the Government of Canada. It is a crucial initiative for Pearson that boosts our objective to emerge as the global leader in the English language for dedicated test-takers, he explained.

IRCC is expanding the Immigrants’ intake to cater to the increasing demand even as Canada focuses on growth and economic recovery in the post-pandemic times. The approval of PTE Core comes at an apt time offering fresh prospects to test-takers. This is specifically true when it comes to vocations like Engineering, Nursing, and Web Development.

PTE Core complements PTE Academic endorsed by IRCC in August 2023 for SDS Visa applications. More than 97% of Canadian Universities and 95% of Colleges accept PTE Academic and also by Governments of Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. PTE Academic is also extensively accepted by Universities in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.

The completely digital PTE Core test is delivered through Pearson VUE and utilizes advanced AI technology for scoring reviewed by human raters. Augmented security initiatives inclusive of biometric data collection make sure that the evaluation of English language proficiency is precise and fair.

PTE Core can be booked online by test-takers a maximum of 24 hours in advance and benefit from test slots available globally and throughout the year. The results can be obtained in an average of 2 days.

PTE Core will be launched across the global network of Pearson spanning 400 plus PTE Centers in 118 nations inclusive of 25 Canadian Test centers.

PTE Core Pattern

The 3 modules included in PTE Core are Writing and Speaking, Listening and Reading.

Writing and Speaking

The writing and speaking component is the lengthiest section of the test approximately lasts 50 minutes. It consists of 7 diverse types of questions and assesses English ability and phrases that you can come across in day-to-day life.

The reading section lasts for approximately 30 minutes and consists of 5 types of questions focused on day-to-day reading skills in English. As PTE Core is an integrated test for skills, one of these questions will also evaluate the skills in writing.

The listening section lasts for approximately 30 minutes and consists of 7 types of questions. The queries in this section are based on video or audio prompts and these start playing after you proceed to the specific question. You can listen to the video or audio clip only once and it is permitted to write notes for this section.

The Canadian Language Benchmark

The CLB is a language standard used by IRCC to assess the language competencies of candidates applying for skilled worker immigration pathways. These include programs managed under the Express Entry System, PNP – the Provincial Nominee Program, and other skilled worker pathways like AIP – Atlantic Immigration Program.

The CLB score is assessed through the speaking, listening, writing, and reading abilities of the candidates in French or English. The least CLB score required to qualify for immigration to Canada is variable based on the program chosen for application.

PTE Core and CLB

The PTE Core consists of 3 modules – Writing and Speaking, Listening and Reading. It is marked fully by scoring technology implying that no interaction with the human examiner exists.

The test-takers are scored on a scale of zero to ninety which is the maximum possible score.

CLB for Express Entry

The 3 economic immigration programs under the Express Entry System are:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker Program – FSWP
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program – FSTP
  • The Canadian Experience Class – CEC

While applicants of all three programs need the lowest score in CLB to qualify, the scores are different for each program:

  • FSWP – CLB 7 in all four competencies in language
  • FSTP – CLB 5 for listening and speaking; CLB 4 for writing and reading

CEC – CLB 7 for occupation level 0 or 1 TEER in NOC and CLB 5 for occupation level 2 or 3 TEER in NOCTo Check Eligibility for Canada Visa contact the Best Immigration Consultants in Delhi Nationwide Visas.
